Ukrainian developer 4A Games has officially confirmed that Metro 2039 will be playable for the first time at Gamescom 2026, giving fans an early opportunity to experience the next chapter of the acclaimed post-apocalyptic shooter series.
The studio announced its participation in the annual gaming exhibition, which will take place next month in Cologne, Germany. Visitors attending the event will be able to play a hands-on demo while learning more about the game’s story, mechanics, and new features.
According to the developer, Gamescom 2026 will mark the public debut of Metro 2039. In a statement shared on social media, 4A Games invited fans to be among the first to explore the upcoming title during the exhibition.
“We have some exciting news! We’ll be at Gamescom this August. Be among the first to experience METRO 2039 in Cologne, Germany. We can’t wait to meet you there.”
A Return to Metro’s Dark Underground
Metro 2039 continues the storyline after the events of Metro Exodus, taking players back to the underground tunnels beneath Moscow. Unlike its predecessor, which featured larger open environments, the new installment focuses on claustrophobic subway tunnels, abandoned bunkers, and enclosed survival horror settings that defined the earlier Metro games.
Players will step into the role of a new protagonist known as Stranger, who must confront an authoritarian neo-Nazi faction called Novoreich while navigating the dangers of a devastated world.
New Story Details Expected
Alongside the playable demo, 4A Games is expected to reveal additional information about Metro 2039’s narrative, gameplay systems, and technical improvements during Gamescom.
The project also features the involvement of Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the original Metro novels, who is contributing to the game’s story development.

Metro 2039 is currently scheduled to launch in February next year for:

While an exact release date has not yet been announced, many expect 4A Games to reveal it during its Gamescom 2026 presentation.
